We grow over 300 varieties of shrubs being particularily strong in Heathers, Camellias, Azaleas,Dwarf Rhododendrons,Dwarf Conifers,Pieris,Hollies and Magnolias.
Our Camellias include the ever reliable x williamsii varieties such as "Donation",Debbie"and "Anticipation"which do well even in colder climates and the reliable "japonica"varieties such as "Adolphe Audusson" and "Contessa Lavinia Maggi".
The Japanese Azaleas include older varieties such as "Hino Crimson" and "Mothers Day" and the more compact Geisha"series.
Exbury and Knaphill deciduous Azaleas with their riot of colour in Spring and often brilliant Autumn colour are deservedly coming popular again.
Dwarf Rhododendrons include both small leaved Alpine and larger leaved large flowered varieties. The Yakushimanum hybrids combine hardiness and neatness of habit in a range of colours.
Conifers go from very dwarf varieties such as Cham.lawsoniana "Gnome" to impressive specimens such as The "Blue Cedar" Cedrus libanii "Glauca" A notable introduction recently has been the golden leaved form of the "Dawn Redwood",Metasequoia Glyptostroboides "Goldrush" with its superb foliage turning salmon and orange in Autumn.
Among the Magnolias this year are two yellow flowered cultivars,"Yellow Bird" and "Golden Lantern". In our opinion the most underrated Holly is Ilex aquifolium "Myrtifolium" with its small deep green finely toothed leaves, ideal for topiary, hedging or specimen. Among the general shrubs there are a few new introductions worth growing such as the much improved Ceratostigma "Forest Blue", Pieris japonica "Carnaval" (variegated P."Mountain Fire"),and the brilliant Physocarpus "Diablo" with its purple black foliage(good plant for damp soil).
Given the milder winters, warm sheltered positions and free draining soil, people are finding success with more exotic shrubs such as Feijoa sellowana(Pineapple Guava),Carpenteria californica and Callistemons. We also stock old shrubs such as Weigela middendorfiana, Lonicera involucrata and Diervilla splendens which should be planted more often. If you need advice regarding suitablility of a shrub for a particular soil, aspect or purpose contact us by e-mail or phone.
In trees,we stock over 120 varieties between November and March either pot grown, ball rooted or bare root. In the Acer genus an interesting newcomer is Acer rubrum "October Glory",a round headed form of the "Canadian Maple" which holds its brilliant red leaves well into Autumn. Another introduction is Acer platanoides "Princeton Gold",a yellow leaved form of the Norway Maple.
Amelanchier "Ballerina" is one of the best forms of the "Snowy Mespilus" with extra large white flowers in Spring and a more erect habit. There are some superb cultivars of the "Birch" family now available to gardeners. Betula ermanni "Polar Bear" is a strong growing Birch with pure white branches and trunk and a heavy branch structure which describes its name while "Fincham Cream"is a small Birch with white bark with a hint of cream and yellow Autumn leaf colour.Betula pendula "Golden Beauty" is a true Golden Birch which doesnt scorch in full sun like other earlier introductions(Golden Cloud)
Another tree new to us this year is Cercis siliquastrum "Avondale"beautiful early flowering form of the "Judas Tree"
The "Flowering Thorns" Crataegus laevigata "Crimson Cloud" stands out for its large single red flowers with white centres. More compact than other cultivars it also flowers earlier in life.
Introduced in 2001 Euonymus hamiltonianus "Miss Pinkie"is a strong growing form with pink fruits which contrast well with the red seeds. This year we also have Euonymus hamiltonianus "Koi Boy"
the white fruits contrasting with the bright red seeds hence the "Koi"
connection. The leaves also colour lemon yellow in Autumn.
The Malus genus supplies us with some superb fruiting and flowering trees. One such tree is Malus "Sun Rival".This is a Weeping Crab with pink buds opening pure white and masses of bright red fruit. The bright green leaves are very healthy and hence this tree makes a superb replacement for Malus "Red Jade".Another good cultivar is Malus "Admiration"of compact upright habit with large white flowers in clusters and masses of persistent red/bronze fruits.
One of the most striking introductions to the tree world is Metasequoia glyptostroboides "Gold Rush",a golden form of the "Dawn Redwood" with yellow leaves turning orange and salmon in Autumn.
Paulownia tomentosa "Fast Blue" is a much more reliable flowering form of the "Foxglove Tree"
The Prunus genus provides us with some of the finest flowering trees and deservedly so for their mostly easy culture and good constitution.Prunus sargentii provides us with early Spring pink flowers and brilliant Autumn tints of red, yellow and purple.Prunus serrula(thibetica) gives us small white flowers in April and wonderful glossy red brown bark.A Japanese Cherry which will undoubtedly become very popular is Prunus "Royal Burgundy",a sport of
Prunus "Kanzan" with deep pink double flowers which contrast superbly with the reddish purple leaves.
Populus alba "Richardii" is a must for the larger garden with bright golden leaves, silver beneath.Treat as a large shrub for best effect and prune hard in Winter.
Salix exigua the "Coyote Willow" is a small tree of upright habit with beautiful narrow silvery grey leaves. This tree is tolerant of both dry and wet conditions.
Of the many Rowans available we must mention Sorbus aucuparia "Autumn Spire"a narrow compact sport of "Joseph Rock"with yellow berries and red Autumn tints and suitable for the smaller garden.Another excellent Sorbus is "Pink Pagoda" a hupehensis cultivar with clusters of pink berries turning white and good Autumn colours.
